Queen of the Blues

from £30.00

Many of the performers at the Carnivale di Venezia are bold and extroverted, vying for the attention of the crowds. As such, I was drawn to this masked lady for the opposite reasons.

Standing on the outskirts of the crowds, with her back to the wall, she struck a demure, shy pose. The performers often use their props as the centrepiece of their act, but she turned away from the orb in her hand, with her eyes looking to the floor and hand over her heart. The sadness and subtlety of her performance made her different from many of the other acts.

The soft sunlight highlighted the textures of her jacquard skirt and put her in stark contrast with the mellow stones behind her. The crisp whiteness of her mask shines brightly against the dominance of the electric blue material and despite that lack of expression on the mask, her downcast eyes bring some rare emotional turmoil to the scene.

Queen of the Blues captures a moment of heartfelt emotion in the fun and frenzy of the festival.
