While staying in Santorini, I travelled the island to capture some of the coastal towns built into the steep cliffs and hillsides of the island. Fira is one such town, built on the coast. Greek urban landscapes are so well known for their white painted buildings and domed churches. The Metropolitan Church, its bell tower and the Hotel Atlantis are Fira’s largest landmarks, all situated at the top of the town. The tightly compacted buildings form a matrix of apartments, homes, bars and restaurants all interconnected by pedestrianised steps and alleyways.
I shot this section of the town at sunset, drawn to all the different building blocks, and filling the frame with its intricate details. The buildings are all stacked on top of each other in a maze of walls and windows, all being hit by the setting sun. I positioned myself in the northern part of Fira, shooting back down the south of the coast. The yellow tones of sunset drench the town and turn the typically pure white buildings into a warm mellow scene. Plenty of people can be seen on the streets and verandas and there is still an energy of hustle and bustle radiating from the town centre.
In post-production I emphasised the yellow and magenta tones in my colour grading, and it is one of my favourite urban landscape photography scenes.
