Santorini Sunrise
Wherever my travels take me, I am always looking for occasions to capture the sunrise and sunset. In Santorini, I travelled up Mount Profitis Ilias so that I had the highest vantage point on the whole of the island to watch the sunrise.
Facing north, I could see the village of Pygros spread in front of me, with Fira to the left and Oia to the far north. As the sun rose, the light was casting a really warm glow across the white painted houses, turning them a luminous yellow. The shadows cast in the dips and ridges of the land highlight Santorini's volcanic origins.
The clouds had yet to clear and were still in a thick blanket over the island. As a result, the sky has this great sense of drama that is not often seen in popular tourist destinations, where the focus is all too often on clear blue, cloudless skies.
Santorini Sunrise captures the island slowly awakening, shrugging off the night before and facing another day of sunshine.
