While Santorini is most famous for its blue domed churches and being a tourism hotspot of the Greek islands, it also has a rich geological history being a dormant volcano.
An ancient eruption created what’s known as a caldera depression, which is largely submerged in the sea. The land visible above water shows the outer perimeter of the caldera, and creates the formations of Santorini and its neighbouring islands Therasia, Aspronisi and Kameni.
To fully appreciate Santorini’s volcanic history, the west side of the island’s coastline shows the beautiful layering of rocks descending into the sea. I set out to capture these rocks at sunset.
Santorini Caldera is taken facing north, to the east of Pyrgos. The sun setting to the east casts a warm golden glow onto the rocks which illuminates the rich geological layering. It was a calm day at sea and a quiet sky overhead, which helps to emphasise the deep textures and crevices of the rocky coastline. The clusters of white houses that are scattered across the hillsides of Fira and the far distant Oia add further depth to this beautiful ancient landscape.
I was pleased to capture Santorini Caldera to showcase Santorini’s volcanic history, and bring awareness to a different asset of this beautiful Greek island.
