The Old Port of Fira
Gialos, the old port of Fira, is one of the most quintessentially Grecian island destinations you could wish for. With roots dating back to the 1600s, it originally served as Santorini’s main port, until the creation of the newer Athinios port. Today, this beautiful cliffside idyll still has a huge amount of character and was somewhere I was really keen to visit during my visit to the island. To get down to the port, you have three options: 1) cable car, 2) donkey, and 3) on foot down nearly 600 steps (Karavolades Stairs). Saving the cable car for the return (uphill) journey and avoiding giving the donkey’s extra strain, I opted for the latter option. Thankfully, this choice enabled me to achieve this beautiful shot overlooking the port and its incredibly turquoise waters.
Providing a lovely aerial view of the town, this capture embodies all the bold colours and natural beauty that make this island so enchanting. Taking centre stage, the yellow walls of an empty cliffside building provide a stunning contrast to the aquamarine of the sea. Anchored at the foot of the cliffs, a yellow boat creates serendipitous harmony with the edifice’s sunshine hues, while the pearly apparitions of stones on the shoreline and the brown volcanic rock of the cliffs make for eye-catching detail and variation. In fact, the more you look at this picture, the more you see – from the pink splash of flowers to the quiet activity of the port’s streets. It’s an image and a scene that really draws you in – much like the reality of these island havens.
