Untersberg Wrapped in Ice

from £30.00

The Austrian city of Salzburg sits at the foot of Mount Untersberg which borders Austria with Germany. During my stay, I took the cable car to the summit of the mountain to capture the spectacular views overlooking Salzburg and the surrounding mountains.

While at the summit, my attention was caught by this striking ice formation. On closer inspection, I could see that beneath the ice was a monument. This was revealed to be the Untersberg war memorial to the mountain troops that fought in the First and Second World Wars. The statue depicts a soldier’s cap hanging from the end of an ice pick, with an inscription that includes the poignant phrase, ‘your death is our life.’

While much of this detail is obscured by the ice, the shape of the ice pick remains clearly defined. In the windswept freezing temperatures, moisture from the air has formed a magnificent barrier of feathered ice plumes around the statue. The effect of the ice is both majestic and beautiful while serving as a stark reminder of the harsh conditions on the mountainside in winter.

I have edited the photograph in black and white to accentuate the texture and detail of the ice crystals. Printed in high definition, the finest details are produced with pin-sharp quality. Untersberg Wrapped in Iceis a piece of Austrian landscape photography that is high-contrast, high-drama and high-altitude.
