Salzburg Blue Dawn

from £100.00

One of the best things about the historic city of Salzburg is the way it transforms after dark, adopting an even more fairy-tale quality than its daytime veneer. This photo, taken in the early hours of the morning, shows the transitional period night and day, with the sleepy city bathed in the warmth of countless orange streetlights and windows blinking into life. Behind, the dark silhouettes of the mountains begin to emerge with the hint of dawn, while the clouds above still cling to an inky cloak. With the low blanket of valley mist hanging in the background, the image broods with drama, yet the city with its Baroque towers and golden glow still manages to exude a story-book charm.

For me, two elements particularly stand out in this capture amongst the city tangle: the famous 11th Century castle and 17th Century cathedral. Two iconic Austrian landmarks and the city’s most recognisable buildings, they really draw the eye with their own unique qualities and stunning architecture. The castle, Hohensalzburg Fortress, is especially dominating – set high above the rest of the city on its mountaintop perch. With roots dating all the way back to 1077, Hohensalzburg contains nearly 1,000 years of history within its walls and still retains a thoroughly regal presence overlooking the city today.
