Himmelfarht Church Midnight Illumination
On my last night of my trip to Salzburg, I decided to take my camera and follow the serpentine flow of the River Salzach which glittered with the lights of the city. Having already explored the city during the day and in the magical glow of golden hour, I wanted to capture the city at night-time. In particular, one subject had especially caught my eye – the 15th Century Maria Himmelfahrt Church. A striking Gothic church with a Romanesque tower, it cuts a tall and solitary figure overlooking the river, dwarfing its surrounding buildings and the Marko Feingold Steg bridge which nestles at its feet below.
While striking in the daylight, the church took on an entirely new character in the night-time, illuminated by powerful floodlights. Already uncluttered by other buildings, its presence was made even more prominent under the spotlight – highlighting the building’s importance and its city setting. Even better for me as a photographer, the bright lighting enabled me to photograph the church in pin-sharp detail, with its illuminated frame standing in stark contrast against the darkness behind – a theological metaphor, perhaps. Adding to both the sense of scale and beauty are the illuminated trees next to the church and the countless bulbs aglow on the bridge below – giving the scene an almost fairy-tale quality.
