Hallstatt Winter Glow

from £100.00

Hallstatt is a small Austrian town nestled between the shores of Lake Hallstatt and the precipitous slopes of the Dachstein massif. Surrounded by mountains and peppered with impossibly picturesque houses that are all coated with thick layers of sugary snow in winter, this lakeside idyll sets the perfect scene for photographic exploration. One particular vantage point in Hallstatt provides far-reaching views over the town, lake and mountains beyond – and it was here that I found myself one late afternoon, just in time for the sun to find a gap in the clouds.

Creating hugely atmospheric visuals, in this moment the sun’s light illuminated the clouds which loomed over a nearby mountain – simultaneously throwing a warm mantle over the mountain face and accentuating its rocky crevices and jagged lines. The transition of colour between the sun’s warm glow and the almost monochrome mountain made for the perfect subject for the lens, while the feathery, snow-coated whisps of trees really lent a sense of scale. Emphasising the raw nature of the scene is the black scar of exposed rock that runs diagonally across the frame. Just out of reach of the sun, it creates a sense of depth and also reflects the formidable, impregnable nature of the mountain.
