Slater's Bridge in Autumn

from £30.00

While I was exploring the areas of Little Langdale and Hodge Close Quarry, I stopped to photograph Slater’s Bridge which connects the two. This small, 17th century narrow stone footbridge covers the River Brathay and leads a path up towards the slate quarries.

Visiting in autumn, conditions were quite boggy, and I carefully picked my way to get an angle of the bridge and ascending quarry path with the imposing Lingmoor Fell rising in the background. The stone wall’s continuation up the hillside helps to draw the eye across the whole scene, depicting the miners’ foot journey in centuries past.

I used a neutral density filter to flatten out the surface of the river and bring out the reflection of the sky on the water. I stayed in this spot for quite a while to allow the clouds to shift in order to have the brightest reflection possible with the overcast conditions. The smooth surface of the water gives further emphasis to the textured stone and rocky outcrops, while the rusty hilltops and vivid patches of grass add autumnal highlights.

Slater’s Bridge in Autumn is a stunning limited-edition print of one of the Lake District’s treasured pieces of mining history.
