Godrevy Snow at Sunset

from £30.00

It’s rare for snow to settle on the Cornish coast. The combined salt and moisture of the sea breeze typically prevent snow from settling here, or quickly dissolves any that does. When the Beast from the East hit the UK in 2018, the easterly wind coming across land rather than sea meant that the snow had a chance to land, and the bitterly cold weather conditions kept it there for longer than usual.

I took advantage of the extreme weather and spent much of my day outside photographing what snow I could find on the ground. What began as a grey cloudy day, eventually cleared to a bright sunny afternoon. I made my way to the coast in time for sunset and found a great spot with Godrevy Lighthouse in the distance.

I wanted the snow to be the star of the shot, so I photographed at a low angle. I cut out the sun to the left of the shot and maximised how much snow I could fit in the frame. While Godrevy Lighthouse wasn’t hit by the sun’s rays, as the golden hue of sunset reached the coast, the dappled powdery texture of the snow illuminated into this rare and beautiful scene.

Godrevy Snow at Sunset offers a rare glimpse of snow on the Cornish coast. Other examples of from my portfolio include St Michael’s Mount Winter Snow and Lanyon Quoit After the Storm.
