West Pentire Poppies Close Up

from £30.00

Capturing the poppies at West Pentire is such a special moment in Cornish landscape photography, and a key marker in the calendar year. The poppies burst into bloom from late May to early July and as a resident of Cornwall, really signal the arrival of summer!

I’ve always been careful to respect the flowers while searching for gorgeous specimens to photograph here. It really is about not disturbing nature and the delicate ecosystem at work. You can see how densely packed the meadow is, not just with poppies but with other wildflowers, thistles and grasses.

I found this lovely cluster of forward-facing blooms providing the perfect focal point in the foreground as the sea of red poppies spreads out behind them. The distant hillsides roll away, down towards the sea that can be glimpsed on the horizon, and I was also treated to a soft, pale blue cloudless sky that balances the busy detail of the meadow.

The West Pentire Poppies are a beautiful spectacle for anyone fortunate enough to visit while they are in bloom. If you are planning a trip to Newquay in late spring and early summer, they are well worth a visit, but please treat the flowers and landscape with respect.
