Kennall Vale Colours

from £30.00

Not far from Truro is the wooded area of Kennall Vale, which has become well known for its historic artefacts including a derelict gunpowder factory and granite ruins. The river Kennall passes through what has now become a designated wildlife trust, and nature has been allowed to take over.

The abandoned buildings were of natural curiosity to me, having photographed several of Cornwall’s mines and engine houses, but as I was exploring the surrounding area, I found this scene. I could see a large rock in the water that would make a natural centrepiece, balanced by the closely overhanging tree. Autumn was setting in, and the turning of the leaves had created layers of seasonal colour. The golden-yellow leaves peppered the branches suspended above the water, giving way to earthy reds and russets of windfall, and a green carpet of moss, grasses and ferns.

The movement of the waterfall naturally draws your eyes down the image, and I smoothed the texture of the water to extenuate the variety of shapes in the surrounding foliage. Standing downstream, I could capture so many elements of nature in one place, it created a perfect beauty spot.
