Resting Elephant Seal

from £100.00

During my voyage of Antarctica, I visited the South Shetland Islands, which is home to an abundance of seal populations. Despite their ungainly bulk on land, they were inquisitive, curious creatures, often shuffling their way closer to visitors to inspect us. I spotted this elephant seal hauled out resting on the bay. Keeping a safe distance, I lay down on the sand to reach its eye level. I used a telephoto lens to zoom in closer and capture the finer details of this magnificent animal. What appears from a distance to be tough, leathery skin is revealed to be velvety fur that shifts and shimmers as the light falls upon it. Studying the image in post-production, I was able to enhance the fine details of the elephant seal’s features, from the folds of its skin to its whiskery snout and wetness of its nose. Its large black eyes in particular stand out, glistening with the blue reflection of the distant icebergs across the shore.
