Antarctica Half Dome

from £30.00

This is a photograph of a snow-capped mountain summit in Dorian Bay, a cove on the north-west side of Wiencke Island in Antarctica. During my time there, I was always looking for where the light had fallen to photograph different elements in my surroundings, focusing on specific details instead of big, sweeping landscapes. I wanted to be able to emphasize certain aspects around me and create a sense of story and scale, and this subject in particular really captured my attention.

A beautiful dome fringed with a striking cornice and covered in cracked layers of snow, this mountain summit made for a truly dramatic sight. Backlit as it was, it magnetically drew the eye and, set between bands of thick clouds coming in from above and below, really eliminated itself from the rest of the landscape. To magnify the scene, I zoomed in with my telephoto lens to capture it in isolation, placing it centrally within the frame. Affording a greater level of detail, it really evokes a sense of the elements at play as the wind and snow powder drift across the back of the ridge. Though overcast, the combination of the clouds and the cool colour palette allows you to focus on the natural drama of the image too. It’s really striking.
